Dr. Francesc Fontbona delivered a very complete conference on Catalan Symbolism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Symbolism was one of the main trends of Modernism. In Catalonia it was practiced by painters Alexandre de Riquer, Santiago Rusiñol –when he left the naturalist influence–, Joan Brull, Josep M. Tamburini, Sebastià Junyent and Adrià Gual, among others. At the beginning it came to be an aesthetic response of a spiritual type, but it was shaped in such a pleasant style, for its dream theme and the effect that it extracted from plant ornamentation, that very soon, around 1900, was used massively by the new Art Nouveau fashion. Painters from Circle of Sant Lluc, led by Joan Llimona, offered a Christian version of the Symbolism.
